FinTech - Opportunity or Threat?

FinTech (short for “financial technology”) is growing rapidly and will disrupt and fundamentally change the financial sector in the years to come. Typically, the focus of FinTech companies revolves around customer-facing solutions and improved user experience by increasing the accessibility and speed of financial services. Recently, an increasing number of applications have focused on mid- and back-office solutions for financial service providers. The target is to reduce costs and improve efficiency and effectiveness.

The FinTech panel will highlight the impact of disruptive technology on the financial sector. This includes threats to the banking industry and the opportunities it creates to increase access to capital for SMEs and investors.

Andre Kuusvek

Director, Local Currency & Capital Market Development, EBRD

André Küüsvek is the EBRD Director for Local Currency and Capital Markets (LC2) Development, leading the Bank’s strategic LC2 Initiative.
Previously, he was EBRD Country Director in Ukraine (2008-13) and in Kazakhstan (2004-08). From 1996-2004, André led EBRD teams investing equity and debt in financial institutions, while also being coordinator for capital markets and stock exchanges and financial sector coordinator for several countries. In 1992 he began his banking career at Tartu Kommertspank and Tallinna Pank, later working for Schröder Münchmeyer Hengst, and for Dresdner Bank.
André has served on the boards of 30+ banks, insurance firms, equity funds and enterprises. He has an MSc from Tallinn University of Technology, and is also a graduate of the Estonian Business School and the Stockholm School of Economics.

 

Urmas Peiker

Co-Founder and Legal / Board member, Funderbeam

Starting his career as a securities regulator in Estonia, in charge of both the regulation and supervision of public capital markets he established an early interest in growth capital and legal compliance. Thereafter he received an LL.M degree from Duke University (US) which led to careers at EBRD, Morgan Stanley, and finally as the Head of Compliance at LHV Bank (Estonia) before beginning to build Funderbeam.

Bassem Salfiti

Non-Executive Board Member, Bank al Etihad

Basem Salfiti is a board member of Bank al Etihad, leading its Digital Transformation initiative and overseeing the acquisition of Safwa Islamic Bank. He is also on the board of the King Hussein Foundation.

Mr Salfiti has over 25 years of experience in technology and financial services. Before joining Bank al Etihad, he was a General Partner at Hummingbird Ventures, where he led investments such as Deliveroo and Souqalmal. Previously, Basem was Managing Director at Perella Weinberg Partners, where he led the firm’s technology banking business in Europe. Mr Salfiti also served as Executive Director in European Technology Investment Banking at Morgan Stanley & Co. and was Chief Operations Officer at Best Laboratories, Inc. He holds an MBA from Columbia University and a BA in Electrical Engineering from Brown University.

 

Vilius Sapoka

Minister of Finance, Republic of Lithuania

Mr. Vilius Šapoka occupies the position of the Minister of Finance of the Republic of Lithuania. In 2012 - 2016 he had been working as a Director of the Financial Services and Markets Department at the Central Bank of Lithuania, and prior to that, he held the position of the Chairman of the Lithuanian Securities Commission. A decade ago, Mr. Vilius Šapoka was also employed in the Financial Market Policy Department of the Ministry of Finance. In 2003 he was granted the degree of Master of Economics in Banking at Vilnius University, and he also has an International Executive Master of Business Administration from the Baltic Management Institute.

 

Jiang Yang

Vice President, Tencent

Ms. Yang Jiang, Vice President of Tencent Holdings Limited who is in charge of the overall management and plan of government affairs in the company. Before joining Tencent company Ms.Jaing had worked at Software Center for the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications, Asiainfo, Siemens and Nokia Siemens Networks, with over 30 years work experience in Telecom Industry. Ms.Jiang graduated from Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications in 1986 with a Bachelor degree in telecommunications engineering and a Masters degree in operational telecommunications in UK.
