What does the southern and eastern Mediterranean look like for the rest of 2018? What are the major global challenges? We will be recording a special edition of the EBRD Pocket Economics Podcast before a live audience at the Annual Meeting & Business Forum. Examining the issues will be a panel of experts and there will also be a chance for you to put your questions on the issues that matter to you.

Neil Buckley is Eastern Europe Editor at the Financial Times, responsible for overseeing the paper’s coverage of central and eastern Europe and the former Soviet republics, including writing editorial columns. An FT journalist for more than 25 years, he has previously served as Moscow Bureau Chief, New York correspondent and EU correspondent in Brussels, and has twice been a columnist on the FT’s agenda-setting Lex Column. He is a former Business Journalist of the Year in the British Press Awards.

Jonathan Charles

Managing Director, Communications, EBRD

Mr. Charles came to the Bank in 2011 after a long and distinguished career at the BBC, winning several awards for his journalism. As a BBC presenter and foreign correspondent, he has appeared on BBC1 and BBC World News television, as well as the BBC’s main radio channels.
His specialist areas include economics, Russia, the EU and international diplomacy; he has a keen interest in issues surrounding the single currency.
He established television operations for the BBC in Brussels and Frankfurt, and operated in many conflict zones throughout the world. He holds an MA (Oxon) and BA in Politics, Philosophy and Economics from Oriel College, Oxford University.

Sergei Guriev

Chief Economist, EBRD

Sergei Guriev joined EBRD in 2016 after running the New Economic School in Moscow in 2004-13 and serving as a tenured professor of economics at Sciences Po, Paris in 2013-16. His research interests include contract theory, corporate governance, political economics and labor mobility. He has published in international refereed journals including American Economic Review, Review of Economic Studies, Journal of European Economic Association, Economic Journal, Journal of Economic Perspectives and American Political Science Review. He has been a board member of Sberbank, E.ON Russia, Alfa-Strakhovanie Insurance Company, Russia Venture Company, Russian Home Mortgage Lending Agency, Russian Agricultural Bank, and the Dynasty Foundation. He also served as a President of the Society for Institutional and Organizational Economics. He is a Member of the Executive Committee of the International Economic Assoc. and a Research Fellow at the Centre for Economic Policy Research, London.

Alexia Latortue

Managing Director, Corporate Strategy, EBRD

Alexia Latortue joined the EBRD in April 2017 as Managing Director for Corporate Strategy. She also manages relationships with other IFIs.

She has 20 years experience in international development and financial systems development. Ms Latortue was previously the Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for International Development Policy at the US Department of the Treasury.

Before Treasury, Ms Latortue spent 10 years with the World Bank where her last assignment was Deputy CEO of the Consultative Group to Assist the Poor (CGAP).

An American national, Ms Latortue grew up in Puerto Rico, West Africa and Austria. She received her MA from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University and her BS from Georgetown University.

 

Tarek Osman

Senior Political Counsellor, EBRD

Tarek Osman is the EBRD’s senior political counselor for the Arab world. He advises the EBRD’s Board of Directors and Senior Management on the region’s politics and political economy. He is the author of “Islamism: A History of Political Islam” (Yale, 2017) and “Egypt on the Brink” (Yale, 2010). He wrote and presented several BBC documentary series on the Arab and Islamic worlds. Tarek has 18-years experience working on the Arab World’s history, socio-politics, and political economy. He advised major investment management, investment banking, strategy consulting, and oil firms, on the region.
